Filmmaking

From its very conception, a made-for-screen story knows the powers and shortcomings of a camera lens. Filmmakers use the frame to draw attention to or eliminate information. Time is a critical piece of the story and the sequence with which images are revealed controls the viewer’s understanding of the story. Teaching video moviemaking to middle and high school students since 2001 has been a gratifying exercise in looking…. and listening. Listening to an audience, listening to the rises and falls of speech and action to know when to cut, and listening for silent beats and for stories that need telling.
